Arno Rafael Cederberg (born July 2, 1885 in Tusby , † October 19, 1948 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish historian .

life and work

Cederberg was born the son of a clergyman in Nyland Province . From 1903 he studied theology in Helsinki before switching to history in 1905. He completed his habilitation in 1913 and was appointed professor of Baltic and Nordic history at the Estonian University of Tartu , the former University of Dorpat, in 1919; since 1924 he also taught general history. He returned to Finland in 1928 and in 1935 became full professor of Finnish and Scandinavian history at the University of Helsinki .

Cederberg founded a school of Estonian historians in Estonia, but also trained some Baltic German historians such as Georg von Rauch and Arved von Taube . He was one of the founders of the Estonian Historical Society, edited the Estonian historical journal Ajalooline Ajakiri as well as a biographical encyclopedia on Estonian history and other reference works. He was also largely responsible for setting up the Estonian archives and became the first director of the Tartu Central Archives .

In his research, Cederberg devoted himself mainly to the 18th century. His most important work is a two-volume history of Finland .
