Life

Arnold Brandenburg came from a long-established Stralsund family, from which numerous members belonged to the city council. His father was the merchant and senior man of the brewing and malting company in Stralsund, Arnold Balzer Brandenburg. In addition to studying at the universities of Greifswald and Göttingen , he was particularly influenced in his youth by the Stralsund mayor Johann Albert Dinnies , who dealt intensively with the history of Stralsund.

In 1808 Arnold Brandenburg became a member of the city council. During the occupation of Stralsund by the Freikorps Ferdinand von Schill , he is said to have offered himself as a hostage instead of the old mayor . From 1822 to 1864 he was town syndicus of Stralsund.

Arnold Brandenburg was married on February 28, 1823 to Johanna Friederica Biel, the daughter of Dr. med. and Physicus Carl Friedrich Biel.

Brandenburg published numerous writings on the history, art history and topography of his hometown in magazines such as the Sundine . Since its foundation in 1826 he was a member of the Rügisch-Vorpommerschen department of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology .
