Arnold Marc Gorter (born December 3, 1866 in Almelo , † September 16, 1933 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch landscape painter and draftsman .

Life

Gorter was born the son of the soap dealer Barend Gorter and Geertruida ten Cate Hoedemaker. After an apprenticeship with his father, he began studying at the Rijksnormalschool voor Tekenonderwijzers (State School for Drawing Teachers) with Pierre Cuypers in 1884 . After receiving his diploma in 1888, he continued to study from 1889 to 1891 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten with August Allebé . While still a student, he was painting landscapes in Drenthe , Twente and Achterhoek .

Gorter became an active member of the Amsterdam artists' association " Sint Lucas ", of which he became chairman in 1899. During his presidency, the membership tripled. He was also a member of the artists' associations " Arti et Amicitiae " and " Pulchri Studio ".

He had his first major solo exhibition in 1898 in the Amsterdam art gallery Buffa. A second exhibition followed in 1900 at Oldenzeel in Rotterdam.

In 1903 he married Sophie Hertz (1883–1979).

He became chairman of "Arti et Amicitiae" in 1908 and was re-elected chairman several times. In 1913 he had a large house with a studio built in Amsterdam. In 1916/17 he bought land with two old farms in Achterhoek and built a country house in 1925.

In 1921, Queen Wilhelmina , herself an amateur painter, invited Gorter to stay at Het Loo Palace to paint the autumn colors together. In 1922 he accompanied the Queen on a five-week boat trip along the Norwegian coast

The crisis of 1929 put an end to the great demand for his work and the stomach ailments from which he had suffered for a long time made painting more and more difficult until he collapsed in autumn 1933.
