Arnold Meyer (born August 9, 1861 in Wesel , † October 9, 1934 in Leipzig ) was a German theologian .

Life

Arnold Meyer was born on August 9, 1861 as the son of high school professor Viktor Meyer in Wesel. He studied theology in Erlangen and Marburg . He became a member of the Marburger , Erlanger and Bonn Wingolf . Then he became a pastor in Oberkassel. In 1891 he received his doctorate. theol. at the University of Bonn , where he was hired as a private lecturer a year later. In 1904 he followed the call to the University of Zurich , where he was appointed full professor for the New Testament and practical theology . From 1910 to 1912 he was rector there .

Arnold Meyer, who was married to Ida (nee Langguth), died on October 9, 1934 in Leipzig.

Meyer made important contributions to the religious history research of the New Testament and its environment . As a representative of liberal theology , he was almost as radical on the question of the resurrection as David Friedrich Strauss , whose appointment to Zurich was prevented in 1839.
