The Arquus Verlag Klaus Pahlich , also Arquus-Multimedia , is an Austrian publisher in Vienna that was founded in 1993 and was particularly active as a small specialist publisher in international environmental protection . Among other things, he published an international magazine on the “Environmental Program for the Danube Basin in the 1990s and an international environmental protection magazine on the topic of drinking water in the early 2000s .

Naming

The name given to the Latin word arquus , which means something like rainbow , corresponded to the direction of the new foundation: people, their environment and the beautiful sides of life are the main themes of the publishing house. The publisher's logo consists of a colored rainbow.

history

Arquus Verlag initially wanted to establish itself purely as a book publisher , but ran into financial problems with its first publication in 1993, the book Menschen am Dach der Welt by photographer and filmmaker Robert C. Schmid . The lavishly illustrated description of the living situation of the people in the Himalayas had textual weaknesses and was reluctant to find buyers at the beginning. 1994 was followed by a book of games , 93  dice games with three supplied, unusual game cubes from the game designer Michael Winkelmann entitled Divine games , as well as a book of poems by Michael Eisner entitled traces of life .

From 1994 to 1998, the publisher took over the complete creation and distribution of the English-language , quarterly magazine Danube Watch ( German: Danube Observer ), which was then published by the DPCU ( Danube Protection Coordination Unit ), a UN organization based in Vienna and was an information medium for the international "Environmental Program for the Danube Basin" with the participation of 12 Danube countries .

From the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000, the publisher, together with the British journalist Geoffrey Weston , who had already worked with Danube Watch , published the English-language periodical World Water Watch. The Magazine of the Freshwater Environment , which was financially supported by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) and The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and dealt with worldwide problems and actions in the field of drinking water . A total of three issues appeared. This magazine also led to the establishment of the Austrian association World Freshwater Fund ( association for the preservation of the world's drinking water reserves ).

Today's publishing program also includes new media ( Arquus Multimedia ), such as web design , desktop publishing and image processing , as well as graphic design and the creation of an image archive .

The publisher is the sole owner of the publisher, Klaus Pahlich, and it is based in Vienna.
