Arthur Arneth

Arthur Arneth (born September 19, 1802 in Heidelberg , † December 16, 1858 ibid) was a German math historian and teacher of mathematics and physics.

Arneth was a teacher of mathematics and physics in Hofwil and Heidelberg. In 1828 he became a private lecturer in Heidelberg ( inaugural dissertation : De lineis rectis in spatiis sitis. 1828) and in 1838 professor of mathematics and physics at the Lyceum in Heidelberg.

His Systems of Geometry treats the elementary geometry of the plane as a whole without the separation into trigonometry , planimetry and analytical geometry that was customary at the time , but in two parts as a theory of straight lines and their mutual position in the plane (including the associated part of trigonometry and the introduction of Coordinate systems), in the second part he deals with the connection of straight lines to flat figures (triangles, squares, polygons, division of areas). A third part (which did not appear) was supposed to deal with the connection of lines with each other without any relation to figures.

He also wrote a history of mathematics in relation to cultural history. Moritz Cantor complained that after having dealt with the mathematics of the Greeks and Indians, there was little room for further development.

  1. ↑ In his own words, he meant the (then) more recent theory of geometric relationships. In the foreword he wrote that he had already completed the third part.
