Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham
Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham ( February 20, 1604 , † March 9, 1649 in London ) was an English nobleman , politician and military man.
Life
He was the son of Sir Henry Capell († 1622) and his wife Theodosia Montagu. He was baptized on March 11, 1604 in Hadham , Hertfordshire . He studied at Queens' College , Cambridge .
He was elected MP for Hertfordshire to the Short Parliament in April 1640 and was re-elected as MP for Hertfordshire to the Long Parliament in November 1640 . On August 5, 1641 he was raised to the hereditary nobility as Baron Capell , of Hadham in the County of Hertford .
In the English Civil War he fought on the royalist side. On 17 January 1645 he was appointed Knight defeated and on March 1, 1645 Privy Counselor appointed. In the summer of 1648 he was one of the commanders of the royalist army that Colchester was besieged by parliamentary troops under Lord Fairfax of Cameron . After news of the Royalists' defeat at the Battle of Preston , the defenders capitulated after a siege of eleven and a half weeks on August 27, 1648. Lord Capell was captured and interned in the Tower of London . After an initially successful escape, he was arrested again on February 2, 1649 in Lambeth near London and thereupon sentenced to death on March 8, 1649 by the High Court of Justice . He was beheaded the following day in front of Westminster Hall in London, along with the other convicts Duke of Hamilton and Lord Holland .
Marriage and offspring
On November 28, 1627, he married Elizabeth Morrison, daughter of Sir Charles Morrison, 1st Baronet, in Watford , Hertfordshire. He had at least six children with her:
