The Arthur F. Burns Fellowship is a German journalism scholarship. It bears the name of the former US Ambassador to Germany and Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Arthur F. Burns . It is awarded by the International Journalist Program eV (IJP).
Every year, the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship program gives twenty journalists from Germany, Canada and the USA the opportunity to gain professional and personal experience in the other country as part of a work grant. The scholarship holders work for at least two months in a guest editorial office of their choice and at the same time have the opportunity to report as correspondents for their home media.
The program was founded in 1988 to improve German journalists' understanding of the US and transatlantic relations. Since 1990 it has been an exchange program between the two countries. The aim of the IJP is to support promising journalists. Some former scholarship holders of the program have received high-level awards, for example the Emmy Award or the annual awards of the RIAS Berlin Commission .
Following the model of the Arthur F. Burns program, the IJP have now launched eleven additional scholarship programs that journalists can run in more than 50 countries.
