Arthur Desmond Colquhoun Gore, 9th Earl of Arran MBE (born July 14, 1938 ) is a British peer and politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

Gore attended Eton College and then studied at Balliol College at the University of Oxford . He then served in the Grenadier Guards before working in management at various newspapers.

From 1972 to 1973 he was Assistant Manager of the Daily Mail , from 1973 to 1974 Managing Director (Md) of Clark Nelson and 1974 Assistant General Manager of the Sunday Express . Gore was director of Waterstone’s  & Co Ltd from 1984 to 1987 . He was chairman ( chairman ) of the Waste Industry National Trade Organization (WInTO). From 1995 to 1998 he was Non-Executive Director at HMV (Thorn / EMI ) , from 1996 to 1998 at South West Enterprise Ltd and from 1997 to 2000 at Bonhams . In 2005, Gore was the director of Weather World .

Gore is currently (as of January 2012) a member of Lloyd’s , a member of the trustee of the Chelsea Physic Garden (1998) and various other trusts, and President of the Children's Country Holidays Fund .

Membership in the House of Lords

In February 1983, on the death of his father, Gore inherited the title of Earl of Arran . In the House of Lords he sits as Baron Sudley , since the earliest dignity belongs to the Peerage of Ireland and is therefore not linked to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords. He gave his inaugural address on November 28, 1984. On the House of Lords website, he lists the media, welfare, sport and external affairs as topics of political interest.

He took an active role in the Conservative faction in the House of Lords. He was Lord-in-Waiting or Whip of the government from 1987 to 1989 and from July 1994 to January 1995. From 1987 to 1989 he was also spokesman for the Home Office , Department of Education and Science (DES) and Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS), and from 1988 to 1989 at the Ministry of the Environment.

From 1989 to 1994 he was Parliamentary State Secretary, first in the Defense (1989–1992), then in the Northern Ireland Ministry (1992–1994), and finally in the Ministry of the Environment (1994). From 1995 to 2000 he was a Parliamentary Consultant at the Institute of Waste Management .

Under the House of Lords Act 1999 , he was elected as one of 90 hereditary peers who continue to have a seat and vote. Its presence in the period from 2001 is in the middle range.

family

Gore is married and has two daughters. He and his wife run Castle Hill in Filleigh.

Since he has not yet had a son, his likely title heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is his distant relative, William Henry Gore (* 1950) (son of Paul Annesley Gore ).
