Arthur Gundaccar Joseph von Suttner (born February 21, 1850 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ; died December 10, 1902 Schloss Harmannsdorf ) was an Austrian writer and pacifist .

Life

Gundaccar von Suttner married Countess Bertha Kinsky von Wchinitz and Tettau (1843–1914) on June 12, 1876 and was disinherited because his parents opposed the wedding. Together with his wife Bertha von Suttner (she was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 ), he lived in the Caucasus for seven years . After doing numerous odd jobs, he managed to establish himself as a novelist.

After his return he was reconciled with his family and the couple lived on their parents' property in Harmannsdorf in the Waldviertel , where they also took in Gundaccar's niece Marie von Suttner (Maria Louise, to be precise), with whom he had a love affair for years, to the chagrin of his wife. Marie von Suttner dealt with this time in her novel “How it became light!”, Verlag Pierson 1898, and dedicated the book: “Dedicated to my dear aunt and teacher Bertha von Suttner. Harmannsdorf, spring 1898. "

As a pacifist, he founded an association to ward off anti-Semitism in Austria. The first public meeting was held on July 2, 1891. He also signed Heinrich Rickert's appeal against anti-Semitism in Germany in 1890.
