Arthur Carl Wilhelm Heffter

Arthur Carl Wilhelm Heffter (born June 15, 1859 in Leipzig , † February 8, 1925 in Berlin ) was a German pharmacologist and chemist.

Life

He studied chemistry and was at 1883 Heinrich Limpricht at the University of Greifswald with the work Some new sulfur compounds from p-toluidine doctorate . In 1897 he isolated mescaline from the peyote cactus . This was the first isolation of a naturally occurring psychedelic substance in its pure form. He was also a professor and from 1922 to 1923 rector of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, the later Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin .

Manual of Experimental Pharmacology

In 1919 he founded the handbook of experimental pharmacology in Springer-Verlag, of which three volumes in seven sub-volumes appeared from 1920 to 1935. From 1935 a supplementary work appeared with a new volume count, edited by Wolfgang Heubner and Josef Schüller . The classic work General Pharmacology by AJ Clark also appeared there in 1937 , which was reprinted in 1970 and 1973. In 1950, Volume 10 was the sequel, edited by Oskar Eichler (until 1978). From volume 11 from 1955, Alfred Farah was co-editor and from 1963 Hans Herken and Arnold D. Welch . In 1975 Gustav Victor Rudolf Born became co-editor. From volume 50 (1978) the English title Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology was in first place. From volume 82 (1987) the German subtitle was omitted and, in addition to Born and Herken, Pedro Cuatracasas and A. Schwartz (Cincinnati) became editors after Farah and Welch left . 103 volumes had appeared by 1992.
