The flat pea ram ( Zygaena osterodensis ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the ram family (Zygaenidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 32 millimeters and are slender and very narrow-winged. The wings are conspicuously pointed. Their body and basic wing color are black. The wings have four elongated red spots, the red of which is stronger than that of the similar species. The middle spot is slightly widened club-shaped. The antennae are slender and also end in slender, long, pointed clubs.

The caterpillars are about 20 millimeters long. They have a light gray-turquoise basic color, which forms a line on the back that is lined with large black spots on the left and right. Next to these spots there is a longitudinal line of yellow spots further out. A fine, dashed, black line can be seen along the back.

Occurrence

The animals come from northern Spain and southern France , across central Europe and southern Scandinavia to Mongolia . They are the only species of their genus in Central Europe to live in the forest , especially on sunny forest paths and in deciduous forests in the lowlands and in light mountain areas. They are heavily declining and rare in their populations almost everywhere . In the southern Steigerwald (Bavaria), however, they are still common.

Way of life

Flight and caterpillar times

The moths fly in one generation from June to July. The caterpillars are found from August and after wintering until May of the following year.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed mainly on the leaves of the meadow pea ( Lathyrus pratensis ) and bird vetch ( Vicia cracca ), but also on other pea and vetch .

development

The development usually spans two years, but can take up to five years. With this long development, the caterpillars are only active three to four weeks a year and then decay into diapause after moulting in order to hibernate later in the caterpillar stage. The caterpillars pupate several meters high on trees directly on the trunk in shiny, silvery, white, spindle-shaped cocoons . They prefer smooth bark. The pupa is brown-yellow and has dark wing sheaths.
