Arthur Hofmann , with full name Max Arthur Hofmann, (born April 19, 1863 in Stötteritz , † March 3, 1944 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German politician (SPD). He is not to be confused with the communist activist Arthur Hoffmann (1900–1945) of the same name .

Live and act

Arthur Hofmann was born in 1863 as the son of a blacksmith . After attending elementary school in Reudnitz, he completed an apprenticeship as a printer (1877–1881). Then he undertook a long hike through Germany and abroad until 1882, which took him through Italy , Austria-Hungary and Switzerland , among others . In 1889 Hofmann founded the publishing house and printing company of the social democratic Volksblatt in Rudolstadt , the last newspaper banned under the Socialist Act.

In 1890 Hofmann moved to Saalfeld , where he also founded a printing company. In 1892 he became a city councilor and in 1896 district delegate.

From 1900 to 1918 Hofmann sat in the state parliament of Saxony-Meiningen . From 1903 to 1907 and then again from 1912 until the collapse of the monarchy in November 1918, Hofmann sat for the constituency of Schwarzenburg-Rudolstadt in the Reichstag of the German Empire . In 1918 Hofmann was still a state councilor in the Saxony-Meiningen interior ministry. From January 1919 to June 1920 he was a member for the constituency 36 (Thuringia) of the National Constituent Assembly in order then from June 1920 to May 1924 as MP for the constituency 13 (Thuringia) in the first regular Reichstag of the Weimar Republic . In 1919 Hofmann became Vice President of the Thuringian State Council.
