Arthur Jeffery

Arthur Jeffery (born October 18, 1892 in Melbourne , Victoria (Australia) , † August 2, 1959 in South Milford , Nova Scotia , Canada ) was an important Semitist .

Life

Jeffery was Professor of Semitic Languages, first in Madras , then at the School of Oriental Studies (founded in 1921 as part of the American University in Cairo ) and, until his death in New York, at Union Theological Seminary , which is affiliated with Columbia University . He is the author of important works on the history of the Koran text . In his book The Foreign Vocabulary of the Qur'an , he examines the origins of 318 foreign words of non-Arabic origin found in the Quran .
