Arthur M. Hind

Arthur Mayger Hind , OBE , FSA (born August 26, 1880 in Burton-upon-Trent , † May 22, 1957 in Henley-on-Thames ) was a British art historian .

life and work

Hind attended the City of London School and studied at Emmanuel College of the University of Cambridge from 1899 to 1902 . He was interested in graphics and drawings and studied with Max Lehrs in Dresden. From 1903 to 1945 he worked at the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in London, initially under Sidney Colvin (1845–1927). In 1931 he became deputy director; as successor to Laurence Binyon he was head of the department from 1933 until his retirement in 1945.

In addition, he taught from 1921 to 1927 as Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford and 1930/31 as Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard .

He was particularly interested in early Italian prints and Rembrandt's graphics .
