Arthur Swatek (born August 20, 1932 in Neu Heiduk , Silesia , † February 4, 1990 ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1985 to 1990 he was chairman of the Erfurt District Council .

Life

Swatek came from a working class family. After attending primary school, he learned the trade of a car mechanic and worked as a car mechanic in Apolda . In 1952 he worked as a driver in the VEB Baubetrieb Apolda, from 1952 to 1954 as a driver in the SED district management in Apolda . In 1965 he later graduated from the engineering school for plant construction in Glauchau , branch Karl-Marx-Stadt, as an engineer for mechanical engineering .

In 1954 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1954 to 1959 he was an instructor in the SED district leadership in Apolda, and in 1959 head of the organization / management department. 1959/60 he studied at the district party school in Erfurt. From 1960 to 1962 he was department head of the SED district leadership in Apolda, 1962/63 secretary of the SED company party organization in the VEB fire extinguishing equipment plant in Apolda. From 1965 to 1967 he was head of the economic policy department of the SED district leadership in Apolda, and in 1967/68 he was secretary for economics. From 1968 to 1970 he was second secretary of the SED district leadership in Apolda. In 1970 he began studying at the party college at the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow , which he graduated in 1973 with a degree in social science. From 1973 to 1975 Swatek was again second secretary of the SED district leadership Apolda, then as the successor to the deposed Werner Rottke until 1980 first secretary of the SED district leadership Worbis . In 1980 Swatek became a political employee of the Central Committee of the SED and was an advisor to the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in Nicaragua . From 1982 to 1985 he was the first secretary of the SED district leadership in Nordhausen (successor to Heinz Schosnig).

From March 1985 until his death in 1990, Swatek was the successor to the late Richard Gothe, Chairman of the Erfurt District Council and Member of the District Assembly . From February 1984 a member of the SED district leadership in Erfurt, Swatek was also a member of its secretariat from 1985 to 1989. After Swatek's death, Horst Lang, who had been the first deputy for many years, took office as chairman of the district council and, in June 1990, Josef Duchač (CDU) was appointed government representative for the Erfurt district.

Honors

Swatek received the Bronze Patriotic Order of Merit in 1976 and in 1980 in silver.
