Arthur Terry

Arthur Hubert Terry (born February 17, 1927 in York , England , † January 24, 2004 in Colchester , Essex ) was a British philologist, critic and interpreter. He was an expert on Catalan literature , especially Joan Maragall .

biography

Terry was born in York in 1927 and attended Saint Peter's School in the same city. From 1947 he studied philology at Cambridge University with John Brande Trend . He first came to Barcelona in 1949, thanks to a study exchange, to research early Catalan monastic life. From 1950 to 1972 he taught Hispanic languages ​​and literatures at Queen's University Belfast , where he was professor from 1962 to 1973. In 1973 he became a professor of literature at the University of Essex . In 1976 he published an anthology of poems by Ausiàs March with English translations, and coordinated a series of essays on Tirant lo Blanc . He was an expert in Catalan and Spanish poetry. His 1973 investigation into Antonio Machados Campos de Castilla must be highlighted. Its translations into English by Joan Brossa and Gabriel Ferrater also need to be highlighted.

Awards

Terry was President of the Anglo-Catalan Society from 1962 to 1965, and also of the International Society of Catalan Language and Literature from 1982 to 1988. In 1982 he was awarded the Creu-de-Sant-Jordi Prize by the regional Catalan government . In 1995 he received the International Ramon Llull Prize and in 2001 the Serra d'Or Critique Prize.
