Artie Shapiro

Arthur "Artie" Shapiro (* 15. January 1916 in Denver , Colorado ; † 24. March 2003 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz - bassist .

Artie Shapiro grew up in New York and began his musical career as a trumpeter at the age of 13, but switched to bass when he was 18. In the early 1930s he worked with Wingy Manone and Joe Marsala , in the mid 1930s he worked as a studio musician and was involved in recordings for the original Dixieland Jass Band , Bud Freeman , Chu Berry and Eddie Condon . In the 1940s he was a member of Paul Whiteman's orchestra and played with Bobby Hackett at Nick's jazz club in New York. Later he went to Hollywood , worked there as a freelance musician and accompanied a. a. Jack Teagarden , Charlie Ventura , Joe Sullivan , Artie Shaw and after his military service from 1947 Benny Goodman recording records. From 1949 he worked in the MGM studios for ten years . He then took part in recordings of Frank Sinatra , Bing Crosby , Peggy Lee , Anita O'Day , Billie Holiday and Doris Day until 1962 .
