Arthur Degner

Arthur Degner (born March 2, 1888 in Gumbinnen , East Prussia , † March 7, 1972 in Berlin ) was a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor.

Life

Degner studied between 1906 and 1908 at the Königsberg Art Academy with Ludwig Dettmann and Otto Heichert . In 1909 he came to Berlin after a stay in Munich . In 1912 he exhibited there in the gallery of Paul Cassirer , at whose suggestion he had traveled to Paris in 1910. Besides Cassirers, he found support from Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann . During the First World War he did medical service from 1914 to 1918. In 1919 he became a board member of the Free Secession , of which he had been a member since 1911. In 1920 he was appointed to the Königsberg Academy. In 1925 he returned to Berlin, where he taught at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HBK). From 1931 to 1933 he was chairman of the Berlin Secession . After the seizure of power by the Nazis, he was busy with work and exhibition ban. Nevertheless, the Villa Romana Prize of the German Association of Artists enabled him to study in Florence in 1936 and in 1937 he became a member of the Association of Berlin Artists , but in 1939 he was excluded from the Reich Chamber of Culture and six of his works were confiscated as "degenerate" . When his studio with 300 paintings was destroyed, he moved to Silesia in 1943 . In 1944, the then 56-year-old was obliged to do fortification work in Poland. After the war he was brought back to the HBK by Karl Hofer . In 1956 he retired.
