from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artur "Iwan" Zirajewski (born January 29, 1972 , † January 3, 2010 in Gdansk ) was a Polish criminal and one of the main witnesses in the murder of the killed chief of the Polish police, Marek Papała .

Condemnation

According to the Danzig public prosecutor's office, Zirajewski worked in the so-called “Club of Paid Murderers” (Polish club płatnych zabójców ). In 2007 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison without parole for the kidnapping and killing of a Gdansk businessman in 1998 and for involvement in a criminal organization. Due to his willingness to cooperate with the authorities, his sentence was comparatively mild. During the trial, Zirajewski testified under oath that he had attended a meeting in April 1998 aimed at finding someone willing to kill the Warsaw Chief Police Officer and Chief Inspector Marek Papała. Zirajewski came to the meeting at the invitation of his accomplices Andrzej "Słowik" Banasiak and Nikodem "Nikoś" Skotarczak and the entrepreneur Edward Mazur . Zirajewski's testimony weighed heavily on Mazur, who was accused of knowing the real killer Papałas.

death

Due to illness, Zirajewski was transferred from prison to a nearby hospital. According to reports from the news portal Onet , he is said to have caused his relocation on purpose. According to the TVN24 news channel, Zirajewski committed suicide while being inpatient at the hospital using sleeping pills. The then Polish Justice Minister Krzysztof Kwiatkowski , however, referred to natural death as a result of a pulmonary embolism . An autopsy did not reveal any evidence of self-inflicted or third-party poisoning. However, Zirajewski's death sparked heated public debate. As a result, the deputy head of the Gdańsk detention center, Major Waldemar Kowalski , was released despite public protests.
