features

The moths reach a wingspan of 10 millimeters. The head is brownish gray and speckled with light gray scales at the top . The antennae shine gray and are clearly ringed dark. The thorax and tegulae are gray and postero-laterally ocher gray. The forewings are dark gray and speckled with light gray scales at the tip. The latter also form the very indistinct drawing. At 1/3 of the fore wing length there is an indistinct dark spot on and directly above the anal fold. The lower one is a little further away from the wing base and has a gray-white border on the outside. A similar spot is in the middle of the wing at 2/3 of the forewing length, it is bordered gray-white on both sides. There is a small gray-white stain on the Costa loader, a similar but larger stain is on the inner corner . The fringed scales are brownish gray, gray-white on the Costa loader and ocher-gray towards the inner edge of the wing. The hind wings shine light gray and have ocher gray scales. The abdomen is dorsally brownish gray, the segments are banded pale behind. Ventrally it is brownish gray and provided with a broad ocher-white vertical line. The anal tuft is ocher white.

In the males, the uncus is short and pointed. The blades are large and wide; the outer edge is convex . On the inner surface there are rows of coarse bristles, in the middle two long and curved bristles arise. The aedeagus is strong, rather short and straight. It tapers distally .

The genital armature of the females is similar to that of Ascalenia vanella , but the slit-shaped bulge of the seventh sternite is wider and much longer. The fold of the sixth sternite is clearly triangular. The side labels are square and have oval, reticulated spots that are larger on the inside of the fold.

distribution

Ascalenia antiqua is common in Israel and Egypt .

biology

The caterpillars live in the branches of Tamarix aphylla . Kasy states that the caterpillars also live in plant galls of Eriophyes species and pupate there. The few known specimens of the species were bred between September and January.
