Ascalenia vanelloides is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Chrysopeleiidae family .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 8 millimeters. The head, thorax and tegulae have a gray-brown sheen and scales with paler tips. The forewings shine gray-brown and are speckled with gray. The scales have light tips, especially at 2/3 of the forewing length, so that a very indistinct bandage is formed. A dark spot is at 1/3 of the forewing length in the anal fold, another at 2/3 in the middle of the wing. The hind wings shine light gray. The abdomen has a gray-brown sheen. The anal tuft is gray-white in the males, in the females it shines gray-white and is darker subapically .

In the males the uncus is long and strong and has a curved tip. The blades are slim and slightly curved. They taper distally . On the inner surface there are rows of hair-like bristles, two very long bristles are on the outer surface near the base. The aedeagus is short and curved. It tapers sharply distally.

In females, the slit-shaped bulge of the seventh sternite is large and U-shaped. It is extended on both sides to form an extension with a reticulate structure. This extension is provided with needles in the middle. The protruding edge of the sixth sternite is deeply indented in the middle. On both sides of the ostium there is a thorn-studded hump that merges into a curved and widening bulge. The bursal duct runs in four loops. The stiffening band of the ductus bursae is narrow at the ostium and widens towards the corpus bursae . The corpus bursae is rounded and provided with two small two-pointed signs.

Similar species

Ascalenia vanelloides is similar to Ascalenia vanella and Ascalenia echidnias . A reliable identification of the species is only possible through a genital examination .

distribution

Ascalenia vanelloides is common in Asia Minor , the Middle East and Central Asia , in the east to Afghanistan . According to Fauna Europaea, the species is also found in Sicily and Cyprus .

biology

The biology of the species is unknown. Kasy suspects that the caterpillars develop on Prosopis farcta as only Alhagi species grew at the site . The head capsule of a caterpillar was found in the abdomen of a female, apparently ovoviviparic . The moths fly from April to August, presumably more than one generation develops.
