Alhagi is a plant kind from the family of legumes (Fabaceae). It forms subshrubs and, more rarely, perennial herbaceous plants. The distribution area extends from Central Asia to the Mediterranean and North Africa. They can be used to stabilize sand and as fodder crops.

Alhagi species are subshrubs , rarely perennial herbaceous plants . The stipules are subpulate. The alternate leaves consist of only one leaflet. Your leaf blade is entire. The inflorescences are axillary racemes with bracts and bracts . The calyx is bell-shaped and has five teeth of unequal length. The corolla is red to purple in color. The genus Alhagi belongs to the tribe Hedysareae in the subfamily of the butterflies (Faboideae) within the family of legumes (Fabaceae).

There are six types:

  • Alhagi canescens (Rule) B.Keller & Shap. : It occurs in Afghanistan and Central Asia.
  • Alhagi graecorum Boiss. (Syn .: Alhagi mannifera Jaub. & Spach , Alhagi maurorum auct. Non Medik. , Alhagi tournefortii Heldr. ): It occurs in Greece, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, on the Arabian Peninsula, on Cyprus, in Turkey and in West asia.
  • Alhagi kirghisorum Schrenk : Se occurs in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Central Asia and Mongolia.
  • Alhagi maurorum medic. (Syn .: Alhagi camelorum Fisch. , Alhagi persarum Boiss. & Buhse , Alhagi pseudalhagi (M.Bieb.) Desv. Ex B.Keller & Shap. , Hedysarum alhagi L. , Hedysarum pseudalhagi M.Bieb. , Alhagi kirghisorum Grossh. non Schrenk ): It occurs in European Russia, in Kuwait, in Siberia and from West and Central Asia to China and Mongolia. As a neophyte it occurs in Australia and the USA.
  • Alhagi nepalensis (D.Don) Shap. : It occurs in India and Nepal.
  • Alhagi sparsifolia Shap. (Syn .: Alhagi kirghizorum var. Sparsifolia Shap. , Alhagi maurorum subsp. Sparsifolium (Shap.) Yakovlev ): It is common in western Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan , Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The sugar excretions from the leaves can be used to treat headaches. Some species are good foliage plants / green plants or can fix sand well.
