Ascocorticium forms the only monophyletic genus of the family Ascocorticiaceae within the order of the Helotiales .
features
The fruiting bodies of the Ascocorticiaceae are protruding (effus), they form a blurred white or pink palisade. A peridium is hardly formed. The layer between the tubes consists of irregular and undifferentiated hyphae , between which the tubes lie. The tubes themselves have an inamyloid apical ring (which cannot be stained with iodine) . The unseptated ascospores are hyaline and small. Minor crop forms are unknown. There is no stroma .
ecology
The Ascocorticiaceae are widespread in temperate areas. The few species live saprotrophically, especially on the bark of Nacktsamern .
