Assela (also Asela , Asella ) is a city in the Oromia region in Ethiopia , more precisely in the Arsi zone , of which it is the main town. In addition, it was until an administrative reform in 1994 was the capital of what was then the province of Arsi . According to a projection from 2015, the city is home to around 99,000 inhabitants and is located about 159 km south of the capital Addis Ababa . As the seat of the administration for the Arsi area, the city still has some administrative functions. The city is located on Mount Chilalo on a high plateau near Lake Zway along the great African rift valley . With the seat of an airport, Asella is an important trade and transport hub for the entire region.
The city is and was home to many very successful Ethiopian long distance runners. The world record holders Haile Gebrselassie , Kenenisa Bekele , Tirunesh Dibaba and Derartu Tulu lived here .
