Asep Wildan (* Bandung ; † July 27, 2000 at Semeru ) was an Indonesian volcanologist and geophysicist .

He graduated with a degree in physics from the Bandung Teknologi Institute in his hometown. Since 1993 he has worked for the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia (VSI), most recently in the East Java branch , whose area of responsibility also included Bali . In this role he made a major contribution to volcanic research and the further development of monitoring programs. In addition, he regularly provided intensive support to international teams of scientists during their excursions to Semeru . In 1998, Wildan was one of eight participants in the Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) annual Group Training Course , organized as part of the Decade to Reduce Natural Disasters .

Following an IAVCEI conference, Wildan and several other volcanologists climbed the Semeru in the summer of 2000, which showed smaller steam and ash explosions. At 6:31 a.m. on July 27, there was a more powerful eruption. It didn't even last a minute, but it shifted quickly and released volcanic bombs . Wildan and his VSI colleague Mukti were hit in the head and fatally injured. Other members of the group included Michael Ramsey from the University of Pittsburgh , Paul Kimberly and Lee Siebert from the Smithsonian Institution, and student Amit Mushkin from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Asep Wildan left behind his wife and daughter.
