Ashleigh Sykes (born December 15, 1991 in Hornsby , New South Wales , Australia ) is a former Australian national soccer player . In January 2012 and December 2014 she won the Grand Final for the Australian Championship with Canberra United , and in 2017 she won the Championship in the National Women's Soccer League with Portland Thorns FC .

Career

societies

Born in a Sydney district, Sykes started at Canberra United in 2008 , with whom she reached the Grand Final against Queensland Roar in the first season of the W-League, but lost it 2-0. The following year she failed in the semifinals with her team at Sydney FC , the team from her hometown. In the 2010/11 season, the game round was completed in third place. In the playoff semi-finals they met Brisbane Roar. In a turbulent game that was 2-2 after 120 minutes, the penalty shoot-out had to decide on the final. Sykes had already been substituted in the 75th minute and was therefore not one of the shooters, of which two players from their team but only one from Brisbane did not hit the goal. Canberra was eliminated. Canberra finished the 2011/12 season in 1st place. In the Grand Final against the long-term rivals from Queensland, she made a goal at 3-2 for the first final triumph of the capital city.

In the 2012/13 season, she was only used in six games for Canberra and scored only one goal. Canberra missed the playoffs in fifth. The following season she was back in 11 games and Canberra finished the season in first place. In the semi-finals of the playoffs, Canberra lost 2-1 to the Queenslanders. In 2014, she ensured with four goals in the league round that Canberra again advanced to the Grand Final. In the 3-1 win against Perth Glory , she scored the two goals for a 3-1 win after the interim 1-1 win, making her Australian champions for the second time.

In 2016 Sykes played in the Japanese second division for AS Harima ALBION before returning to Canberra for the 2016/17 season of the W-League, where she was top scorer with twelve goals. For the 2017 season, she switched to NWSL participant Portland Thorns FC , with whom she won the championship. She retired after the 2017/18 season, for which Sykes returned to Canberra United.

National teams

Her performance in the W-League made her interesting for national coach Tom Sermanni . On October 9, 2008, she was used in the game against Thailand for the first time in the national team. But she was not nominated for the 2011 World Cup . Until the 2014 Asian women's soccer championship , for which she was then nominated again, she had scored two goals in four other international matches. In the championship, in which Australia could not defend the title, she was only used in the group game against the weakest opponent Jordan , but she remained without a goal. With the semi-finals, Australia had already qualified for the 2015 World Cup.

In March 2015 she took part with Australia in the Cyprus Cup 2015 , where she was used in the games against the Netherlands and Finland (with scoring ) and in the 6-2 in the game for 5th place against the Czech Republic and scored the last goal. On May 12, 2015 she was nominated for the 2015 Australian World Cup squad .
