Ashoka Mody

Ashoka Mody (born January 14, 1956 ) is an Indian born economist. He is Charles and Marie Robertson Visiting Professor in International Economic Policy and Professor of Public and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs of Princeton University in the US.

Previously he was Deputy Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for research and the European departments. He was responsible for the IMF's Article IV consultations with Germany , Ireland , Switzerland and Hungary and also for shaping the financial rescue program for Ireland . Mody previously worked at the World Bank , coordinating the 2001 Global Development Finance Report , of which he was the lead author. He held leadership positions in Project Finance and Guarantees in the Prospects Group . He has advised governments worldwide on development and financial projects and policy while writing extensively for policy and academic audiences.

Career

After electronics - engineering degree , graduating with a B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1978, Mody earned an M.Phil. for Applied Economics at the Center for Development Studies in Trivandrum (1979–1986) and worked as an economist at Boston University (1986). From 1986 to 1987 he was with AT&T Bell Laboratories . From 1987 to 2003 he worked at the World Bank and from 1997 to 1998 he was visiting professor of public policy at the Wharton School . He has been with the International Monetary Fund since 2001 .

In an article for Bloomberg LP on July 17, 2015, Mody called for Germany to leave the euro zone in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the other euro countries, as the euro could depreciate against the re-introduced DM . He repeated this statement on July 5, 2018 in the NZZ .
