Austria's first energy-plus house

aspern IQ is a technology center in Vienna's 22nd  district of Donaustadt and part of the Seestadt Aspern urban development project . It was constructed in 2012 as the first of five buildings.

History and planning

The technology center is the core for business settlements in the Seestadt Aspern ("lighthouse project").

More precisely, an ensemble of five buildings with a research infrastructure is planned. The architecture competition took place in January 2010 and was won by ATP Architects and Engineers (Innsbruck). Part one was built from July 2011 to August 2012. Around 300 jobs can be created on around 7,000 m², including 5,000 m² of rental space.

Since October 5, 2013, the technology center can be reached from downtown Vienna in 25 minutes using the U2 .

The building could be viewed in April 2014 as part of the Long Night of Research .

Structural matters

investment

The building site is a pentagonal plot of land on the north side of the future Sonnenallee , the ring road of the new district outside, on the west side the tracks of the U2 run (to the parking facility Seestadt ). The development concept provides for the block perimeter development to be broken up into small-scale structures. The south-west edge is occupied by a loose cubature building (component 1), the south-east edge is occupied by two similarly designed, identical objects. The northern edge is formed by two U-shaped, more compact buildings that are closed towards Sonnenallee. As a result, all five houses open roughly to the south and form an easily accessible open space in the center of the property, in which the overall motif of the seaside city is repeated with a small pond.

Component 1

Component 1 2012, still under construction

The first building to be built, primarily an office building with laboratories and production areas, has a construction area of around 11,000 m² (gross floor area 11,850 m², net 10,620 m²). Two wing wings of different heights, five and three storeys high, which are connected to a central stair tower, rise above a closed ground floor, which serves as an open space. The higher wing is raised by a technical block. The total cubature is 50,250 m³.

Overall, the building presents itself in a minimalist form and with emphasis on structure . The facades are simply divided into window and blind facade bands, the latter in bronze-metallized iron. In addition, window canopy strips made of solar panels stretch over two sides, which also span the breakout between the two side wings on the south-west facade, thus closing the building somewhat. These also have a green facade in the form of reed vegetation. The entire roof area is also used for solar modules, and two small vertical rotor wind turbines are installed on the staircase .

Construction engineering

The planning of the entire district is based on the concept of the Smart City , which is based on intelligent buildings and sustainability . Therefore, the technology center was designed as an energy-saving house . In addition, the first construction lot had a multifunctional building envelope ( add-on façade ) , which provides thermal insulation, interior shading and also facade greening, a geothermal system that is also used in particular for building cooling (a district heating connection is available for peak loads ) or consistent use of waste heat, for example from the server rooms. Component 1 is also equipped with 1,300 square meters of photovoltaics, which together with the energy-saving measures ensure that the house produces more energy than the operation consumes ( plus energy house ) . As such, it is the first building to meet this energy standard in Austria. The building exceeds the criteria of the TQB building standard and has been awarded klima: aktiv gold .
