Assamo ( Arabic أسامو, also: Ina 'Assamo , Vasama ) is a place in the Ali Sabieh region in Djibouti . In 2019 it was estimated to have 1,200 inhabitants.
geography
The place is about 122 km south of the capital, Djibouti on Wadi Aderiodzhog , which also forms the border with Ethiopia in the south. The area is fertile and, in addition to simple agriculture, there is extensive pasture farming with nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyle of the shepherds. The closest places are Ali Sabieh (24 km), Ali Adde (19 km) and Guisti (18 km). The population belongs mainly to Afro-Asiatic language groups, with a majority of Issa - Somali .
history
Assamo used to be ruled by the sultanates of Ifat and Adal . In modern times it was part of French Somaliland . The protectorate existed until the first half of the 20th century. There is an old fort of the French Armée de Terre in the city . The city is also an important marketplace for the area.

Assamo has a rare highland climate with warm summers and cool winters. Due to the height of approx. 754 m , the temperatures are comparatively low.
