As Ela , (also: As Eyla , Diksa , 'As' Êla ; Arabic ايلى) is a city in the Dikhil region of Djibouti , on the border with Ethiopia . The city is also the capital of the district of the same name, the southwestern administrative district in Djibouti.

The city is located about 160 km southwest of the capital, Djibouti, and 5 km north of the border with Ethiopia. The National Highway 6 runs through the town and the former Crater Lake Abbe is a tourist destination. The place is on the Oued Katoumbati , which flows into the Wadi Garabl'iya there .

Demographics

In 2016, the population of As Eyla was estimated at 17,000. The locals are mostly from Afro-Asian ethnic groups, mostly Afar and Issa .

history

Asa Ragid is an archaeological site in the area. The surrounding mountains consist of relatively young rhyolite and basalt , the age of which is estimated to be 7000 to 8000 years. Rubbish heaps with oyster shells have been found, as well as circular stone structures and a microlite industry with red jasper and obsidian , as well as ceramic shards and more or less decorated pearls and ostrich egg shells . Asa Koma ("Red Hill") near As Eyla was a settlement towards the end of the third millennium BC. It is believed that the residents mainly lived as fishermen, hunted jackals and kept cattle. Ceramics with printed decorations and chiseled objects of good quality were found. The motifs are reminiscent of ceramics found in Sudan . In 1989 a grave site of an older adult and a young woman (~ 18) was found. The grave contained numerous obsidian and bone tools, as well as pearls made from ostrich egg shells or clam shells from the Red Sea . Animal bones from jackals, hippos or gazelles , antelopes and cattle, and fish bones from tilapia and catfish were also found.
