Astan - More Than Music was a music and culture magazine from Metelen for the black scene with a focus on erotic photography .

History and meaning

Right from the start, the magazine was published quarterly by Verlag Stefan Mensing. The magazine was mainly available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to unknown artists, the magazine also featured popular representatives of the black scene. For example, interviews with Malice Mizer , Mark Benecke , Welle Erdball , Ville Valo ( HIM ), Stephan Groth ( Apoptygma Berzerk ) and Tilo Wolff ( Lacrimosa ) were printed in Astan.

According to Bianca Stücker , the Astan was able to set new trends in the black scene with the focus on visual kei as well as erotic photography and the increased promotion of individual bands , which were then picked up by other scene media. Among other things, according to her, the magazine influenced the popularity of the band Undead , which was regularly highlighted in the magazine early on. In 2007 the publishing house of the magazine was stopped, instead the publishing house concentrated on the concert agency, which had been active since 1994 .

Content and design

With detailed reports and interviews, the magazine was devoted to unknown and popular artists and topics from the alternative , visual kei and black scene environment. The regular features of the magazine included at least a multi-page presentation of the work of a photographer of erotic photography. In the meantime, the magazine appeared in black and white A4 format throughout.

Occasionally, musicians from the Gothic and Dark Wave areas were also discussed, but this main focus remained rather small compared to the dominant main topics. In addition to interviews, categories for literature and films and esotericism, the issue also included a CD compilation that presented renowned artists and newcomer bands. The CD also contained a CD-ROM section containing further detailed interviews and photos.

In relation to the big magazines in the scene, Andrea Schlitz described the Astan as a comparatively small magazine, with a circulation that is closer to Gothic than Zillo . It is emphasized that the magazine was produced completely independently and without advertisements , especially for the number of copies and the distribution of the magazine .
