Daihatsu has been present in Indonesia since 1968 - initially with a CKD assembly.

As part of the business relationship with the Indonesian Astra Group, commercial vehicles have been produced since 1973, in some cases also through the Astra subsidiary Gaya Motor .

In October 1979, PT. Daihatsu Indonesia had its own assembly plant, and in 1985 its own engine plant in Indonesia started operations.

At the beginning of 1992 the joint venture Astra Daihatsu Motor was founded, which merged the previous business areas (vehicle and engine production, import, sales).

Since 2008, vehicles manufactured in Indonesia have also been exported to Japan. In 2010 the Gran Max, Luxio and Xenia models were among the vehicles with the largest local share in Indonesia.

At the end of 2011, ADM had 8,000 employees.

In April 2012, a second plant was opened in Karawang , which has a theoretical production capacity of up to 120,000 copies in two-shift operation.

By March 2012, Daihatsu had produced three million vehicles in Indonesia, and by April 2017 it had already produced five million. Production in the 2017 financial year amounted to around 540,000 vehicles.
