Life

Båhl's design of the Sami flag

Båhl spent the first years of her childhood in Karesuando in northern Sweden before moving to Skibotn in Norway. She began her artistic and technical training at secondary school. She later attended the Oslo State Crafts and Arts Industry School , where she trained in textiles , graphic design , graphics and freehand drawing.

In 1986 a competition started to determine a new common Sami flag. Before that, there had already been local flags flying. Båhl, who wanted to take part in the competition, then researched Sami signs and symbols as well as Sami mythology . Their proposal was chosen as the winner at the 13th Nordic Seed Conference in Åre on August 15, 1986 . The flag has served as a flag for the Sami in all countries ever since. In 2003 the flag was officially recognized by the Norwegian state.

Båhl exhibited her art in Mijjen luunie - Kums oss , a South Sami traveling exhibition that opened in Elverum in 1994 . This was also shown during the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . In 2017 she was commissioned to design two stamps for the centenary of the first Sami national assembly in Trondheim .
