Astridia is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors Astrid Schwantes, the wife of Gustav Schwantes .

description

The species of the genus Astridia grow as a succulent shrub up to 50 centimeters in height, the appearance of which is determined by the thick sickle to crescent-shaped, triangular to sharply triangular or, more rarely, finger-shaped leaves . Your epidermis is covered with low or high papillae , with the leaves feeling velvety in the latter case. The stomata are sunk. They are located either at the base of the low papillae or in depressions that are arched by long papillae. The outer epidermal wall contains a layer of crystal sand and larger grains 5 to 15 micrometers in length.

The individual flowers , measuring 30 to 70 centimeters in diameter, have bracts . There are six sepals . The petals are white, yellow, orange, red or purple in color. In the last three color variants, the base of the petals is often white or yellow. The petals of the inner circle are sometimes shorter and narrower and seem to merge into the numerous filamentous staminodes . The filamentous staminodes, which can also be absent, surround the stamens in a cone. The nectarium forms a lophomorphic ring.

The usually six-faced fruits are funnel-shaped at their base. They contain seeds 1.2 to 1.7 millimeters long and 0.85 to 1.5 millimeters wide , the seed coat of which is differently papillary.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Astridia is distributed south of Lüderitz in Namibia to the northwest of the Namaqualand in South Africa. The species usually grow on rocks in areas with rainfall less than 100 millimeters annually, which falls in winter or in March. Some fog also contributes to the precipitation.

The first description of the genre by Kurt Dinter and Gustav Schwantes was published in 1927. The genus Astridia includes the following species:
