Astrophytum ornatum is a species of the genus Astrophytum in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ornatum is derived from the Latin word ornatus for 'decorated' and refers to the attractive thorns of the species.

description

Astrophytum ornatum grows with dark green, spherical to cylindrical bodies , which are scattered with white or yellow tufts of hair. They reach heights of growth of 30 to 100 centimeters and diameters of 15 to 30 centimeters. The mostly 8 sharp-edged ribs are sometimes arranged in a spiral and have yellowish, often balding areoles . The strong yellow thorns emerging from the areoles turn brownish or gray with age. There is a central spine and 5 to 10 flattened radial spines.

The bright yellow flowers are 7 to 8 inches long. The fruits tear from their base towards the middle and open up in a star shape.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Astrophytum ornatum is common in the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Hidalgo , Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí .

The first description as Echinocactus ornatus by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Astrophytum in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
