Abbot Athanasius Bernhard

Athanasius Bernhard SOCist (born January 2, 1815 in Radonice u Kadaně , † March 18, 1875 in Osek ) was a Bohemian Cistercian and from 1853 to 1875 abbot of the Osek monastery .

Life

Bernhard took his religious vows in 1838 and became a priest in 1840. As a doctor of theology, he taught the New Testament in the monastery and at the Leitmeritz seminary . As secretary and later as vicar general (from 1854) he supported Cardinal Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg and Bishop Hille von Leitmeritz in visiting the Cistercian monasteries.

Elected abbot in 1853, he had the monastery church and parish churches renovated. He had the monastery hospital expanded, founded a girls' school and was able to round off the monastery premises with state compensation payments. During the German War of 1866, the monastery had to accommodate and provide for soldiers several times. Other ventures were less successful, the limestone quarry near the monastery was closed in 1874 due to unprofitability, and the coal mine near Střimice was sold.

From 1861 to 1866 he was a member of the Austrian Imperial Council . In 1869 he took part in the General Chapter of the Cistercian Order in Rome .
