Șipet (German: Schipet , Hungarian: Sebed ) is a village in Timiș County , in the Banat region , in southwestern Romania . Șipet belongs to the municipality of Tormac .

Geographical location

Șipet is located in the south of Timiş County, 9 km north of Gătaia .

In the course of the centuries different spellings of the place name appeared: 1462 Zebet , Magerzebeth , Sebet Magyarzeben , 1483 Sebed , 1497 Tothsebeth , Magyarsebeth , 1717 Schipeth , 1808 Sipeth , Sippet , 1851 Sipet , 1913 Sebed 1919 Șipet .

A first documentary mention comes from the year 1462, when the place appears under the name Magyarzebenth in the contemporary documents.

Schipeth is entered on the Josephine land survey of 1717 . After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat . On the Mercy map from 1723 the place Shipiet is inhabited with 367 families.

In the 19th century the estate belonged to the Duca family, as a result of an imperial donation for the services of Field Marshal Petre Duca (1755–1822) in the Napoleonic Wars .

As a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . The official place name was Sebed .

The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat , whereby Șipet fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
