The Athenaeum Elbingense (also Royal High School ) was a high school in Elbing in Prussia from 1535 to 1944.

history

In 1535 the first humanistic grammar school in Polish Prussia was founded in Elbing . It was located in a building in the outer bailey of the former castle of the Teutonic Order , which was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was built in the 17th century and was used by the Brigittenkloster Elbing from 1468 to 1520 . It was founded on the initiative of the city council, especially the mayor Jacob von Alexschwangen, to promote humanistic culture and education in the city. The Dutchman Willem van der Vollensgraft , who had previously been headmaster in The Hague , became the first rector .

In 1599 the building was rebuilt and better adapted to the needs of the school. It received a splendid renaissance facade. The Academic Gymnasium in Elbing had a good reputation and was attended by citizens' sons from Polish and Ducal Prussia , but also from Pomerania , Silesia , Bohemia , Transylvania , the Netherlands, England, Scotland and other countries. One of the most famous teachers was the scholar Johann Amos Comenius , who taught here between 1642 and 1646.

During the French occupation of 1805/07, the building was badly damaged and used as a hospital. It was restored in the following years, 1808/09.

In 1882 the grammar school moved to Königsberger Straße, and a girls' middle school was moved to the previous building , which was renamed Agnes-Miegel-Schule in 1932 . The school was closed in 1944/45.

The old building was used as a school again after 1945, and in 1972 it was handed over to the city museum. It is now an archaeological museum. The newer building from 1882 at ul. Królewca also remained a school building and is now the 2nd Liceum. There were 15 high schools in Elbląg in 2019.
