The Atlético Clube de Portugal is a sports club from the Alcantara district of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . The club's first football team has played in Portugal's second division, the Segunda Liga , since its promotion in the 2011/2012 season . Other sports are basketball ( “Segunda Divisão” ) and futsal , for which they were one of the pioneers in Portugal.

history

The club was founded on September 18, 1942 as a result of the merger of the two clubs União Foot-Ball Lisboa and the Portuguese champions of 1928, the Carcavelinhos Football Club .

The club has played 24 seasons in the country's top division, most recently in 1976/77. Atlético CP achieved the best placings in the seasons 1943/44 and 1949/50 with third place. The club was often represented in the Portuguese cup competition , but has never won the cup. Most of the time the club played in the third division, 35 seasons so far and six in the fourth division.

The best result in the Portuguese Cup competition was achieved in 1946 and 1949 with the entry into the final. The 1946 final at the Estádio Nacional was won 4-2 by Sporting Lisbon , and three years later the club also lost the second final 2-1 to Benfica Lisbon .

One of the best-known players is Paulo Sérgio , who played for the club from 2009 to 2011 and also played for Rot-Weiss Essen in the 2nd Bundesliga . Former Portugal international Carlos Manuel was the club's head coach from 2007 to 2009.
