Atlético Hidalgo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Atlético Hidalgo is a football club from Pachuca , the capital of the Mexican state Hidalgo . The team, also known by the nickname Toltecas ( Spanish for Toltecs ), plays its home games in the three thousand-seat Estadio Revolución Mexicana in Pachuca.

history

The club was founded in 1996 after city rivals CF Pachuca had made it to the Primera División and at the same time Mexico 's second soccer league, which was then called Primera División 'A' , was increased from 16 to 18 teams for the coming 1996/97 season. In addition to Atlético Hidalgo, Real Sociedad de Zacatecas was also founded and accepted into the league for this purpose .

The "Toltecas" played an excellent season and reached the finals of the 1996 winter tournament (first half of the 1996 season) with wins against Marte (0-0 and 1-0) and the "co-promoted" Real Sociedad (2-0 and 5-1) 97), which were lost 1-0 and 0-3 to the UANL Tigres , who dominated the league . In the 1997 summer tournament (second half of the 1996/97 season) Atlético Hidalgo failed in the quarterfinals with 1: 4 and 3: 1 against the Tigrillos , the Tigres' B-Elf.

After only one year in which the "Toltecas" had enriched the league, the license was sold to the first division club Deportivo Toluca , who needed it for a starting place for his newly created branch team Atlético Mexiquense in the second division.

Since then, the club has been represented in the fourth-class Tercera División and currently (2012/13 season) plays in Group VI.
