The G1 series was the world's first series of Con- Ro ships (from the English container RO Ro ) - a type of ship with which both containers and Ro-Ro cargo can be transported at the same time . The concept of the G1 series was developed in Sweden . The four ships, Atlantic Span , Atlantic Star , Atlantic Song and Atlantic Saga were commissioned in 1965 from three different shipyards by the three Swedish shipping companies Wallenius Lines , Rederi AB Transatlantic and Svenska Amerika Linjen (Broströms), whereby Wallenius had ordered two ships and one of the ships was handed over to the fourth partner, the Nederlandsche Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij. The units set in motion in 1967 were used on a time charter for the joint shipping consortium Atlantic Container Line . The type ship Atlantic Span was built by Nordseewerke in Emden, two of the other ships were built by the Ateliers et Chantiers de Dunkerque shipyard in Dunkirk and one was built by Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona . In 1975 and 1976, the quartet of ships was lengthened by 25.80 m each, increasing the container capacity by 400 TEU. At the same time, around 80 meter long extensions were added to improve stability . In November and December 1987, all four ships finally arrived for demolition at the Kuo Dar Steel Enterprise Company in Kaohsiung.
Loading space arrangement
The four sister ships had four each cell guides equipped hatches or holds for the normal transport of containers (569/969 TEU ). They were provided with trailer and car decks of various heights (5500 m² deck area with 4.5 m height and 9800 m² deck area with 1.7 m height), which could be reached via a 7 meter wide stern ramp. There were also three side doors measuring 4.5 x 4.5 m. The weather deck, which can be reached from the ro-ro area via another ramp, could also be loaded with trailers and containers.
