history

According to the chronicle, the place name should be derived from the old German ula = pot or ulner = potter. Documents state that pots were sold to the monastery in Schlüchtern in Ulmbach as early as 1324. In 1253 there was the first written mention of Ulmbach. Due to its location in the Bergwinkel, the area around Ulmbach was already crossed by the Celts (Milseburg near Fulda) and Teutons.

In 1409 the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Ulmbach is mentioned for the first time as a parish church. Various feuds between the 14th and 16th centuries made life in and around Ulmbach difficult, causing numerous small settlements around Ulmbach to disappear. At the beginning of the 18th century, many Ulmbach families (Böß, Heyd, Kohlmännin, Söhn) moved to Hungary (Szederkény and Himesháza) due to the great domestic hardship.

In 1810 the village of Ulmbach is incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt. In 1834 the population was 1221. In 1848 the bourgeois revolution also spread to Ulmbach. 85 “Rioters” shoot, riot and declare the liquor tax lifted. The second big wave of emigration, this time in the direction of America, began in 1864. The people of Ulmbach (e.g. Ochs, Herber, Lauer, Nussbaum) headed for their new home from Bremerhaven and Hamburg. The First World War began in Ulmbach, as in almost all parts of the empire, when the bells rang on July 31, 1914. By 1918, 51 Ulmbach residents fell victim to the war.

In 1932 the time of National Socialism began, the persecution of the Jews unfortunately did not stop at Ulmbach either. In 1905 there were 57 Jews living in Ulmbach, in 1938 only 12 and after the Second World War there were no more Jewish residents.

In the Reichstag election on March 5, 1933, there was no majority for the NSDAP in Ulmbach compared to the Altkreis Schlüchtern. Instead, the Center Party won.

93 Ulmbachers never returned to their homeland from the Second World War. On March 31, 1945 (Easter Sunday), Ulmbach was occupied by the Americans without much fighting. 357 expellees found a home in Ulmbach for the time being, some stayed forever.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the place Uerzell was incorporated on December 31, 1971. Sarrod joined on April 1, 1972. On July 1, 1974, the Ulmbach community was incorporated by law into the town of Steinau, now “Steinau an der Straße”. The formerly independent communities of Ulmbach became districts of the city of Steinau an der Straße. For were local districts with town council and mayor set up.
