Atlas is a massive multiplayer online game that was released on December 22nd, 2018 in the early access phase for Microsoft Windows .

Game principle and game world

In Atlas , players take on the roles of pirates who can explore a mysterious world and design their own pirate ship. Here, hostile players and creatures such as dragons provided by the game meet . Core elements are building a crew, ship battles and the search for treasures. Objects can be collected and processed into equipment, weapons and components using a crafting system.

The game world is 1200 times larger than ARK: Survival Evolved and up to 40,000 players can play in the same game world at the same time. This makes it so big that it takes more than 30 hours to circumnavigate the card.

Development and publication

At the Game Awards 2018, Studio Wildcard , the developer of ARK: Survival Evolved , announced the massively multiplayer online game. In order to develop Atlas , Studio Wildcard had founded the sister studio Grapeshot Games and carried out a one-year recruitment phase to ensure that the development does not lead to the further development of Ark: Survival Evolved being neglected.

The game was released on December 22, 2018 on the Steam distribution platform in the Early Access phase for Microsoft Windows . The release was originally planned for December 13th and then for December 20th and 21st. A version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also appear in 2019 .

Later submarines will also be added so that the underwater world can also be explored.

Reviews and player numbers

The game was largely rated negatively on Steam. Above all, the players criticized game errors that make the game partly unplayable and affect the performance, the confusing menu and parallels to Ark , which are to be sold again as "Reskin" or remake. Even the positive reviews are sometimes cynical and sarcastic .

Despite the many negative reviews, the game sells very well and is currently number 12 of the best-selling games on Steam. At weddings, the game is played by over 50,000 players simultaneously. The developer tries to fix the bugs in the game with updates and to improve the feel of the game and points out the vulnerability of an early access version. The business magazine Forbes describes the start of the game as one of the most failed in the history of computer games. Despite the negative criticism, the game landed at number 4 on the weekly Steam top seller charts between December 31, 2018 and January 6, 2019.

Player behavior and user-generated content

In addition to the criticism of the feel of the game, the game also has to struggle with hacking and cheater attacks . However, the game also supports the development of mods . For example, modern weapons and vehicles can be added that do not fit into the setting. There are also tensions in the community, some of which are expressed in personal attacks or racism. Players have organized battle royale events themselves, although this mode is not in the game.
