Sven Güldenpfennig

Sven Güldenpfennig (born October 18, 1943 in Potsdam ) is a German sports official and sports scientist .

Life

After the end of the Second World War, Güldenpfennig's family moved to Northern Germany, he passed his Abitur in Reinbek in 1963 and then studied German and sports for teaching at the Free University of Berlin . In 1972 he passed the first state examination.

As an active athlete, Güldenpfennig competed for the OSC Berlin, among other things, including best times of 11.4 seconds over the 100 meter and 52.8 seconds over the 400 meter distance. His record for the marathon distance is two hours and 58 minutes. Later he was an ambitious amateur cyclist.

In terms of university politics, he belonged to the “New Left in Sport” and campaigned for reforms in the field of physical education. During his studies he had already made a reputation for himself as a representative of this direction through his participation in sport in late capitalism . After his state examination, he worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin from 1972 . There he was involved in developing university sports. In 1976 Güldenpfennig was one of the founding members of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS). In 1977 his doctoral thesis on "Sport as an Object of Trade Union Policy" was accepted at the University of Bremen . In 1988 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Darmstadt , the title of his work was “Peace. Challenges to Sport ”, having previously been active in the Peace Movement for Sport. Until 2017, Güldenpfennig was a professor, visiting professor and university professor in the subjects of sports philosophy, sports sociology, sports politics and sports history at several universities, including the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin and the universities of Bremen , Potsdam , Hamburg , Münster and the Germans Sports University Cologne .

At the end of the 1970s and in the 1980s, his academic work dealt with, among other things, the subject of "Sport and Trade Union", the Olympic movement, international sports relations, and later also topics such as "Sociology of sport as a cultural science", "The sport of society", Connections between sport and politics as well as "The abuse of sport". Güldenpfennig was editor of the publication series “Sport as Culture. Studies on the meaning of sport ”and brought out a total of around 40 books. The WorldCat has 93 publications from him.

From 1978 to 1993 Güldenpfennig was a member of the board of the General German University Sports Association (ADH) and later became an ADH honorary member. Among other things, he examined the relationship between university sports and sports science. He also worked on a voluntary basis for the German Sports Youth and the German Sports Association. From 1997 to 2002 he was Scientific Director of the German Olympic Institute in Berlin . However, his ideas about the Olympic Games were not always capable of consensus.

In addition to his academic work, Güldenpfennig was a school companion for pupils with disabilities in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm for four years, at the age of 74 he started a position as a high school teacher in German in 2018 in Vohburg .
