Atlas Crusius
Atlas Crusius (born December 26, 1606 in Syhra ; † May 15, 1679 in Chemnitz ) was mayor of the city of Chemnitz.
Life
Atlas Crusius was the youngest son of Balthasar Crusius . Presumably he attended the Dresden Kreuzschule , where he enjoyed an excellent musical education as a student and adjuvant . In 1625 he was enrolled at the University of Leipzig .
In 1634 he was appointed cantor and third school colleague in the Latin school in Chemnitz . There he married Maria Steiner on April 12, 1635, the widow of his predecessor, the cantor Elias Greim. She died in 1639. On March 9, 1641, Crusius married Maria Wetzel, the daughter of Hieronymus Wetzel, master baker and church leader of St. Jakobi .
In 1644 he became councilor ( senator ) in Chemnitz and in 1648 city judge ( praetor ). From 1663 to 1675 he was elected mayor (consul) of the city of Chemnitz six times.
His life's work consists in promoting the rebuilding of the city, economy, infrastructure and culture after the turmoil and destruction of the Thirty Years War .
Atlas Crusius died in 1679 and was buried in a grave of honor at the Johanniskirche in Chemnitz "outside of the wall by the small door of the sacristy" . He had two children from his first marriage and four children from his second marriage.
