The Atlas warbler ( Sylvia deserticola ) is a songbird belonging to the genus of warblers ( Sylvia ). It occurs in western North Africa .
description
With a length of 11.5 to 12.5 centimeters, the Atlas warbler is one of the smaller warblers. The tail is relatively long, but shorter than that of the Provence warbler and has gray upper tail-coverts ( rump ). The legs are sand colored. The color of the plumage is very similar to that of the spectacled warbler . The wings are rusty brown, the eye ring is white. The flanks are brick red. The head is blue-gray.
In males in splendid plumage , the throat and breast are also brick-red, the gray of the head extends to the feathers of the arm wings , the back and to the tail. In the simple dress , the throat and chest are light with light pink-beige and white beard stripes. The females are colored like the males in the plain dress, but the females have a dark iris and the males a red one.
The young birds have a monochrome light beige throat and are beige-brown on the head and back, which differs from the olive-gray-brown of the spectacled warbler. Their upper tail-coverts are beige-brown.
voice
The call is an often repeated "check". The warning call sounds like a sparrow , nasal screeching "Tschett-ett-ett-ett-ett ..."
The fast, chirping vocals contain a few intertwined whistles. It sounds softer and more pleasant compared to that of the velvet warbler .
Habitat and Distribution
The Atlas warbler breeds in sparsely vegetated mountain slopes or on heather areas with low bushes such as macchia and garrigue . Sometimes single holm oaks or cedars are also accepted.
Its year-round distribution area is northern Africa , which belongs to the Palearctic . It is a part-migrant who moves south in winter and then lives in semi- desert and dry steppes with bushes.
