The Atrio (own spelling: ATRIO ) is a shopping center in Villach . It is located on the southern edge of the city, near the motorway exit Villach Warmbad towards Italy . It is the largest shopping center in the state of Carinthia in terms of sales area and the second largest after the City-Arkaden Klagenfurt .

History and Development

The developer, builder and operator of the atrio is SPAR European Shopping Centers GmbH , which in turn is a 100% subsidiary of SPAR Österreichische Warenhandels AG . The opening of the first part took place on November 3, 2005, the official overall opening on March 19, 2007.

The shopping center offers a sales area of around 39,000 m² on three floors, which can be reached via nine panorama lifts and 18 escalators. There are over 90 shops, cafés and restaurants on the first and second floors. Four of the shops extend over both floors. On the ground floor there is also a customer information desk, a police station and, as a special feature, a large, accessible map. There is a family adventure world on the second floor, which is mainly used as a parking deck.

With its “three-country concept”, the Atrio is Austria's first themed shopping center due to its location at the junction between Austria, Slovenia and Italy. The name Atrio contains on the one hand the syllable "trio" as a symbol for the three countries, on the other hand Atrio can be derived from the Latin "atrium", which means something like square or forecourt. All signs, orientation information and menus are in three languages, and the information staff also speak all three languages. According to the symbolic national colors green (Italy), blue (Slovenia) and red (Austria), the shopping center is divided into three core areas, each of which is assigned a color.

Awards

On December 3, 2008, the Atrio was awarded the International Design and Development Award by the ICSC as the most innovative shopping center in the world. Also in 2008 it received the “ TRIGOS Award for Social and Ecological Responsibility ”, a prize for ecological sustainability. In May 2009, it was named the most sustainable shopping center in the world with the ICSC Best of the Best Award . In 2009 the Atrio received the “TRIGOS Award for Social and Ecological Responsibility” again. In 2009 the Atrio also received the “ICSC Solal Marketing Award”. Atrio received the "Solal Marketing Award" for the best marketing initiative.
