Around half of the SPAR supermarkets, some EUROSPAR stores and the SPAR-express petrol station shops are run by independent retailers who purchase their goods from SPAR wholesalers.

With over 39,000 employees, the group is Austria's largest private employer (2013) and the largest apprentice trainer (2,500 apprenticeships in 13 professions).

In the food retail sector, where 1,607 Austrian locations are operated (end of 2013), SPAR Austria has a market share of 29.8% based on total sales in food retail in 2012 (as of: beginning of 2013).

Ownership structure

The SPAR Austria Group is the only food retail company operating throughout Austria that is wholly Austrian-owned. 93% of the shares are owned by the founding families Reisch, Drexel and Poppmeier, whose trading companies merged in 1970 to form today's SPAR Österreichische Warenhandels-AG. 7% are owned by merchants who joined after 1970.

history

The positive development of Spar in the Netherlands , Belgium , Germany and Denmark prompted the Kufstein-based wholesaler Hans F. Reisch to set up an organization based on this model in Austria.

In the autumn of 1954, Hans F. Reisch founded the trade association SPAR Tirol / Pinzgau , which emerged from his company Andreas Hofer KG and its clientele. Around 100 independent merchants came together at this time. SPAR wholesalers in other Austrian federal states soon followed .

This created the basis for a national retail chain . Spar was already active throughout Austria from 1959.

SPAR Austria rationalized the grocery trade by using roller containers when transporting the goods, introducing an order record or installing a computer-controlled invoicing system .

But the focus was not only on easing the work of the merchants, there were also changes on the customer side: SPAR Austria was one of the first to focus on self-service and gear its stores accordingly. The introduction of a fresh service for fruit and vegetables and the use of effective marketing methods and concepts heralded the first golden age of the Austrian SPAR at the end of the 1960s .

The founding of SPAR Österreichische Warenhandels-AG through the merger of all ten wholesalers that existed at the time was another milestone in history in 1970 . With this step, the Spar Austria headquarters also moved from Vienna to Salzburg-Taxham. In 1970 INTERSPAR GmbH was also founded as a subsidiary of SPAR Austria. Since then she has been operating the INTERSPAR hypermarkets, restaurants and web shops in Austria.

ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) was founded in 1990 and is now based in Widnau , Switzerland . With their participation and professional guidance, their own SPAR country organizations were set up in Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Croatia.

At the end of 2016, Rewe International announced that Spar in Croatia had bought Billa's entire network of 62 branches with 1,900 employees.
