List of supermarkets in Austria

history

Supermarkets emerged in the early 1950s with the then new and still unusual concept of self-service . The first self-service supermarket in Austria was KONSUM , which opened in Linz on May 27, 1950 .

Karl Wlaschek founded a perfumery in Vienna-Margareten in 1953 and sold branded items at discount prices. He later transferred this concept to the food sector and also adopted the self-service principle. From 1961, Karl Wlaschek's stores were renamed BILLA.

In 1954, Hans F. Reisch founded the trade association SPAR Tirol / Pinzgau. Around a hundred independent merchants came together and gradually more and more Spar stores emerged. Spar has been represented throughout Austria since 1959.

opening hours

The opening times for supermarkets and grocery stores are generally regulated in the amendment to the 2003 Opening Hours Act, which will apply from January 1, 2008.

In principle, shops can be open from Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. As a rule, most supermarkets open Monday through Friday between 7:00 and 7:40 a.m. and close between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Markets in ski areas, train stations and airports have different opening times. Metro markets are open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Supermarkets and grocery stores are usually closed on Sundays, but there are some exceptions for Sundays. Supermarkets at train stations, airports or in tourist areas are generally open on Sundays.

All over Austria, 154 Spar branches and five Billa branches are open on Sundays. (Status: January 2018) In addition, one of the Zielpunkt successors, The Market Mariahilf, is also open on Sundays, as are the Okay and U3 supermarkets, which are located at train stations in Vienna. Grocery stores that also offer a bakery, a restaurant or a tasting of warm dishes and have integrated these into their business premises are also allowed to be open on Sunday.
